The ministry of external affairs on Thursday said that India remains firmly committed to ensuring energy security for its people. The statement came in response to the Russia sanctions bill, passed by the US Congress on Wednesday.
Amid a threat of 100 per cent tariffs by the US, India said it will continue to ensure energy security for its 1.4 billion people through diversified sourcing and based on evolving market dynamics. “The Indian side has also made clear its determination to take all necessary measures to protect its trade and economic interests. Government will work closely with Indian trade and industry bodies to deal with the implications of these developments,” the statement read.
Taking a note of the passage of the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, the ministry said it was monitoring developments on the matter. The ministry said the issue has been discussed at high levels in recent months with various US interlocutors. India has “clearly articulated” the potential implications for not just the bilateral relationship but also the international energy market.
