U.S. missions across West Asia have issued a security alert advising American nationals to “exercise heightened vigilance,” citing Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and the potential for Iran and its allies to launch attacks against U.S. interests .
“Be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions,” the advisory said, adding that “the hostilities have the potential to escalate rapidly beyond that immediate area. “Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world, including U.S. businesses and other institutions,” it said.
Yemen’s civil war erupted in 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and forced the internationally recognised government to relocate to Aden. Saudi Arabia led a military coalition into Yemen in March 2015 to support the government and push back against the Houthis, triggering years of fighting and airstrikes.
