Two separate citizen protests will be held in Pune on Sunday to raise awareness about noise pollution during Ganeshotsav and call for more responsible celebrations.
As part of the campaign, a padyatra will begin at 10.30 am from Puram Chowk (Abhinav Mahavidyalaya Chowk) and proceed along Bajirao Road before concluding at Shaniwarwada. The first protest, organised by Sakal Hindu Samaj, will demand a DJ-free Ganeshotsav and urge citizens to use traditional musical instruments instead of high-volume sound systems. Organisers have appealed to citizens to join the march. The organisers have urged citizens and families to participate in the demonstration against the use of DJs. The campaigns highlight concerns over the impact of excessive noise on residents and call for greater public responsibility during festivals. Organisers have stressed that opposing high-decibel music does not mean opposing Ganeshotsav or cultural celebrations. The protests come amid an ongoing debate in Pune over noise levels during Ganeshotsav. citizen groups have been demanding stricter enforcement of noise pollution norms While several Ganesh mandals and political representatives have opposed restrictions on DJs and sound systems. Through the demonstrations, organisers are expected to reiterate that Ganeshotsav can be celebrated with enthusiasm while respecting residents, senior citizens, children and others affected by excessive noise.
A second citizen-led protest, titled “Punekar – Sujaan Nagrikanchi Tham Bhumika”, will be held at Goodluck Chowk at 11 am.
