Jessica Patrzyk, 34, and her husband did just that in rural Worth, New York, according to an interview with Realtor.com . They taught themselves through YouTube tutorials, used materials collected from local dumps, and built a 2,500-square-foot home for $40,000. They sold it for $290,000, moved to Florida, and started the next chapter of their lives.
Most people dream of owning a home, but very few people build their own from scratch.
It all began with a curious trade. The couple then built a home on it themselves. Neither of them had a construction background or a large budget to lean on. Instead, they relied on online videos and their own hard work. The couple learned the work from YouTube tutorials. For the interior, Patrzyk collected used doors, windows, and kitchen cabinets from local dumps. They even installed a water well and a septic system themselves to cut costs. With cash in hand, they loaded up their belongings in a truck and headed to Florida . Patrzyk points to kayaking and swimming with manatees among the activities Florida offers. It’s easy to see why the story got noticed.
Patrzyk received two acres of land in the small town of Worth from her grandfather in exchange for a 55-inch television. The finished house has 2,500 square feet, four bedrooms, and three bathrooms. Every bedroom has a loft, and there’s even a 17-foot climbing wall. The couple put the total cost at $40,000. They listed the house, and then, 90 days later, a buyer came along who would pay $290,000. They looked at some daring possibilities, including a three-story yacht for sale in Stuart for $275,000. Finally, they settled on renting a newly built six-bedroom home in the community of San Antonio on an 18-month lease at a reduced rent of $3,200 a month. Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies reports in its Ten Takeaways from the 2026 State of the Nation’s Housing that existing home prices are up 54% nationwide since 2020. Its analysis shows that in late 2025, a household needed an income of over $120,000 to afford payments on a median-priced home, up from $66,000 in 2020. Against that backdrop, a $40,000 home stands out.
Because they did the labor themselves, the real cost was their time and effort.
