New Delhi: PV Sindhu cruised through her first match at the BWF World Championships, beating Sophia Noble of Ireland 21-7, 21-11 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on Monday. The good turnout of fans warmed the heart of the two-time Olympic medallist and 2019 world champion. For the biggest star of the Indian contingent, assessing the court conditions on the opening day was the main focus.
“Overall, playing for the first time, it was important for me to get used to the court conditions and see how it is. That was the first thing on my mind.
I think I managed it well, and the court conditions are pretty good,” said Sindhu, who will take on Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang in the second round.
“I was very excited to get onto the court. In the morning, the men’s doubles pair MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan also sailed through after Ireland’s Scott Guildea and Paul Reynolds retired midway through the second game. Sindhu took to the court after Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated Spain’s Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez 21-9, 21-13 in the women’s doubles first round. The Indians were leading 21-16, 6-4 at that point. The second women’s doubles pair of Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi came through a tough first game to beat Nikol Carulla and Carmen Maria Jimenez of Spain 22-20, 21-14.
