Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he is forgiving students who hurled abuses at him and his mother during the Jantar Mantar protest, saying they were “misguided children” who deserved guidance rather than punishment or prolonged legal action.

“Whatever happened at Jantar Mantar, the country and the world have seen it. Some mischievous children used very filthy abuses—words were used that would not suit any civilized society. Abuses were directed at me, and abuses were directed at my late mother as well; I don’t know how ugly the nature of it was. But today I want to say that mistakes happen in youth, and there is also an opportunity to reform from mistakes made in youth—and this is what childishness is. That is why I can well understand the anger within society; there is a cultural shock as to how our daughters could speak such language. But it is time to show these children the right path by embracing them. These are misguided children, and showing them the way is our duty; we will not be able to change circumstances by punishing them, making them run around the courts, or harassing them in society. I want to forgive them, and may society accept this request of mine as well, because I have only one thought in my mind: sometimes our tongue comes under our teeth and blood comes out, but we do not break our teeth—because the teeth are ours, and the tongue is ours too. The children are also ours, and showing them the way is our duty,” said PM in a new video.
