Man accused of punching NYC woman freed by judge, allegedly attacks: A practical reader guide

A 28-year-old woman says she was left shocked after a man who allegedly punched her on a Manhattan street was released by a judge. The same man allegedly attacked an 85-year-old man the next day. She has now questioned the justice system, saying she no longer feels safe in her own neighborhood.

A Manhattan judge released Tarrant the next day, according to court records. Tarrant attacked two other women within five minutes before he was arrested. The two other women did not stay to file complaints. A day later, Tarrant allegedly attacked an elderly man in Hell’s Kitchen, as per the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. But Criminal Court Judge Jeffrey Gershuny freed him on supervised release.

Police arrested Tarrant, who is 24. The misdemeanor charge was not eligible for bail under the 2019 reform laws. Prosecutors asked for $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.

Because the victim was over 65, this time he was charged with felony assault.

She called the police and followed him, she told The Post. She said she saw him throw a glass bottle at an older woman and punch another woman near the South Street Seaport. He was charged only with misdemeanor assault for allegedly hitting her, the woman said. An NYPD spokesman said police officers cannot take a crime complaint without a victim. It says he kicked the man in the legs until he fell, then punched him twice in the face.
