INDIA bloc leaders' virtual meeting to discuss roadmap for 'vote: A practical reader guide

The proposed virtual meeting of the INDIA Bloc on the future course of action on protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has been deferred, sources said.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was to chair the meeting, which will also review the preparations for the INDIA bloc’s rally in Delhi on November 1, they said.

He reminded that both the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, and the Congress general secretary, KC Venugopal, had announced that the protests will continue until Gyanesh Kumar resigns. The meeting also assumes significance as it comes at a time when there is speculation over the government convening Parliament to pass a Constitution amendment bill, involving delimitation, for the early implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act. With the political success of our marches in the heart of Delhi, some leaders want a repetition of that massive mobilisation. Another idea is to hold a mock Parliament that will enact the impeachment of Gyanesh Kumar.

The INDIA bloc leaders were to brainstorm on charting out the roadmap of protests, review the preparations for the November 1 rally and discuss ways to corner the government over the ‘vote chori’ issue soon during the meeting. Earlier reporting noted: The Opposition met President Droupadi Murmu on October 9 to demand “resignation of Kumar and repeal of the 2023 law that provides life-long immunity to the CEC and the ECs.

Other steps have also been suggested,” CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby told HT. They sought “immediate suspension of the SIR and immediate restoration of all 13.3 crore voters illegally deleted from electoral rolls.”

Earlier reporting noted: “Various options are being considered at this stage. Earlier reporting noted: A senior Congress leader added that there are no concrete plans but “things are being chalked out by the top leadership.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also hosted INDIA bloc leaders for tea at his home on October 13.

After the meeting, the opposition bloc vowed to continue resisting and take the “vote chori” fight to its logical conclusion.
