Congress hits out at PM Modi over confronts-offs with Chinese PLA: A practical reader guide

The Congress on Friday (October 23, 2026) attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the reported “face-offs” with the Chinese army in Arunachal Pradesh, asking him to take the nation and Parliament into confidence by making a comprehensive statement on the border situation.

The Opposition party accused Mr. Modi of being a “coward” for not raising border issues with China during his meetings with the Chinese President and said India’s interests can not be allowed to be surrendered. In a post on X, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Enough clean chits to China. PM Modi must come clean before India! Enough CLEAN CHITS to China. Three questions demand answers:

  1. NATIONAL SECURITY The ITBP DG’s confirmation of continuing PLA face-offs in Arunachal Pradesh is deeply alarming. After Doklam and Galwan, is another serious confrontation unfolding? Reports of Chinese incursions near Taksing emerged in August. Yet, even 47 days after Corps Commander-level talks at Wacha–Damai, reportedly just 180 km away, confrontations continue. Has India’s patrolling access been compromised? Arunachal Pradesh is an inseparable part of India. Why is the nation being kept in the dark?
  2. ECONOMIC SECURITY Since Galwan sacrifice of 20 Indian Army bravehearts, (FY2020–21), Chinese imports have surged 102%, while India’s trade deficit with China has ballooned 155% to $112.16 billion. Even Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman admits China obstructs Indian exports. Yet, the Government is easing Chinese investment restrictions and considering PLI benefits for eligible China-linked ventures. Has Make in India become Import from China?
  3. DIPLOMATIC ACCOUNTABILITY At least 23 reported Modi–Xi meetings and interactions, 25 Special Representatives’ rounds involving NSA Ajit Doval, 36 WMCC meetings, and successive SCO and BRICS Summits. What tangible results have these engagements delivered? Have India’s pre-May 2020 patrolling rights been fully restored? Our Armed Forces have our complete confidence. But National security demands accountability, not diplomatic photo opportunities & Hugplomacy! Instead of attacking the Opposition, PM Modi must take Parliament and the Nation into confidence. https://t.co/WxHQ2ZtKV4 “Instead of attacking the Opposition, PM Modi must take Parliament and the Nation into confidence,” Mr. Kharge said, posing a set of three questions on national security, economic policy and diplomatic accountability. Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh said there had been a “deafening silence” on China from the PM and his establishment. Addressing a press conference, the Congress’s head of media and publicity Pawan Khera said the Prime Minister gave China a clean chit in 2020. “The Indian National Congress demands a comprehensive statement in Parliament by the Prime Minister, Defence Minister and Home Minister; a confidential all-party briefing; a credible account of restored patrolling access and frontier communities’ rights; and a time-bound plan to modernise ITBP capabilities, strengthen forward infrastructure and reduce strategic dependence on China,” he said, adding that the armed forces do not lack courage, they need political clarity, equipment and unwavering support. Earlier reporting noted: ‘Enough clean chits to China’: Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress questions PM Modi over security, trade Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over India’s national and economic security in relation to China, citing reported ongoing face-offs between Indian and Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh and the widening trade deficit between the two countries. Earlier reporting noted: “Enough clean chits to China. PM Modi must come clean before India! Kharge said in a post on X, accusing the government of “keeping the nation in the dark” over border security. Earlier reporting noted: Kharge’s remarks came after Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) director general Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor said on Friday that face-offs with Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops were continuing at multiple locations along the Arunachal Pradesh border. The developments follow reports of face-offs in the Taksing area and Corps Commander-level talks held at the Wacha-Damai border meeting point to address tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
