Allahabad HC to young lawyers — Focus on career, not social media: A practical reader guide

The Allahabad high court on Friday observed that young lawyers should focus on building their careers rather than generating likes on social media, amid ongoing disruptions and protests on the court campus.

The court noted that certain social media posts regarding the functioning of the high court contained incomplete and twisted information, which may lead to unnecessary differences between the bar and the bench. Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal made these observations while hearing a bail plea by one Rajesh. The court asked the High Court Bar Association to look into the issues and take appropriate steps to maintain the dignity of the court at a high pedestal, observing that the dignity of advocates includes both private and government advocates. The court observed, “Young advocates should concentrate on their studies as well as on preparing their cases to build their careers instead of concentrating on increasing their social media likes.

Because the public places trust in the high court, conversely, the court emphasised that advocates command respect in society solely. Because a section of advocates does not want the court to function, while the majority of advocates wish to argue their cases, the court noted that judicial proceedings cannot be allowed to be stalled merely.

“Such conduct on the part of some advocates is not conducive to the reputation and dignity of the Bar as well as the Court.” the court said.

The matter arose during proceedings involving protests and disruptions where certain advocates stopped other lawyers from entering the courtroom of Justice Deshwal. During the hearing of the bail application, the court heard the voice of a lady advocate who wanted to enter to attend her case.
