Supreme Court likely to hear Rahul Gandhi, other Oppn. leaders' plea: A practical reader guide

The Supreme Court on Thursday (October 15, 2026) is likely to hear a petition by the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, along with other leaders of Opposition parties, seeking a judicial examination into the alleged arbitrary and unilateral exercise of power by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in the conduct of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The LoP also sought an interim direction from the Supreme Court to suspend the SIR pending consideration and adjudication of the issues raised in the petition in order to protect the rights of eligible electors and preserve the integrity of the electoral process. Justice V. The writ petition also sought action against police action on the October 10 anti-CEC protests. On Monday (October 12, 2026), Mr. Mohana, who is part of the Supreme Court Bench hearing petitions challenging the illegal detentions and clampdown of October 10 anti-CEC protests, is not holding court on October 15, a notice on the court’s official website said. She has been keeping unwell since Tuesday (October 13, 2026) and the judge did not sit on the CJI Bench on Wednesday (October 14) as well. Justice Mohana was part of the Special Bench led by Justice Joymalya Bagchi which had held a hearing on Sunday (October 11, 2026).

Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders moved the top court seeking a complete disclosure of “files, agendas, minutes, notings and objections” recorded by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi on the SIR process, which has so far led to the deletion of about 13 crore voters from electoral rolls across India.
