Tension prevailed in Madhya Pradesh ‘s Ujjain on Monday morning after a physical altercation occurred between protestors and police personnel during the demolition of a portion of the Shahi Masjid for a road-widening project .
The injured were given primary treatment. To control the situation, police allegedly fired tear gas shells and resorted to a cane charge to disperse the crowd. A hearing in the matter is scheduled for Monday at the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court .
Senior officials said the situation was brought under control, but a police force of around 2,500 personnel, including teams from neighbouring districts, has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
Police said ten people have been identified and a first information report (FIR) has been registered against them for stone pelting and disturbing peace. They are accused of spreading misinformation and disturbing peace,” a senior police officer said. A mob, including women, pelted stones at police teams that had reached the spot to provide security for the demolition drive, leaving half a dozen policemen injured, according to police.
