Chennai, The Tamil Nadu government will establish new nursing colleges in six districts, with an annual intake of 100 students each.
The GO gives effect to Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s announcement in the Assembly to establish new nursing colleges in the six districts. The existing facilities at the respective medical colleges will be utilised to accommodate the new intake for the current academic year. “Seven new government nursing colleges will be started. “The proposed manpower shall be engaged strictly on a temporary/contract basis and only to the extent actually required for the approved intake. No permanent posts shall be created, and no additional pensionary or other continuing liability shall accrue to government on account of such engagement,” the GO stated.
The six nursing colleges will be established in Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Tirunelveli, according to a government order issued on September 16. The expenditure of ₹ 270.26 crore for the project will be met by the Tamil Nadu Dr M G R Medical University. Additionally, a seventh nursing college with an intake of 60 students will be established at the Coimbatore Government Medical College and ESI Hospital, taking the total number of new B Sc Nursing seats to 660. Vijay had said no new government nursing colleges had been started in Tamil Nadu since 2014 While making a statement under Rule 110 in the Assembly. In order to produce the nursing, pharmacy and paramedical personnel required to provide quality medical services, additional student admissions would be created in government medical colleges at an estimated cost of ₹ 351 crore, he had said. As many as 660 B Sc nursing student seats will be created, and an additional 1,925 student seats will be created in existing nursing colleges and nursing schools, 2,778 student seats in 12 paramedical courses and 735 additional seats in pharmacy courses, totalling 6,098 additional seats,” the CM had said.
