Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (August 26, 2026) called Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah and offered “all possible humanitarian assistance” to the country as it deals with a devastating flash flood that started at the Nepal-China border and went on to affect townships and tourism spots downstream of the Bhote Koshi river, including Rasuwa and Chitwan.
The people of India stand in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Nepal at this difficult time. India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal. “My thoughts and heartfelt sympathy are with all those affected, particularly families and communities facing these difficult circumstances. I wish everyone in the impacted areas safety and well-being. Sri Lanka stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Nepal at this difficult time,” Mr.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake also sent a condolence message over the situation in Nepal, which last faced a major disaster in 2015 when it was hit by a major earthquake. “Spoke to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed condolences on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal.
Our teams are coordinating closely on rescue and relief efforts,” said Prime Minister Modi in a message on X. Dissanayake said.
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu is coordinating rescue efforts that will reach Nepal in the coming days. Rescue and relief efforts continue to be strengthened in coordination with the Government of Nepal. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi condoled the loss of lives in Nepal.
“I urge the Government of India to make every possible effort, in close coordination with the Nepalese authorities, to locate the missing Indian citizens and ensure their safe return,” he said in a statement. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also said that India should “extend every possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal in this difficult hour”. He added, “The Indian National Congress stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and prays for the safety of all those affected.”
In a press note, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said, “The Embassy of India has remained engaged with the relevant authorities of Government of Nepal for early rescue and relief for Indian nationals affected by the flash floods that took place in Nepal today.
A C-130 aircraft carrying relief supplies is scheduled to depart from Hindon Air Base late Wednesday (August 26, 2026) night, while a C-17 aircraft carrying additional relief material is expected to leave for Nepal on Thursday (August 27, 2026) morning.
The Indian Air Force will deploy two aircraft carrying relief material to Nepal, sources said.
