NAVI MUMBAI: A new LPG cylinder brought home on Sunday afternoon ended up triggering a fire at an Airoli house, leaving a 30-year-old man with 80% burns and his 50-year-old mother with 50% burns. Both are in critical condition, while a neighbour was also injured in the blaze.

He then stepped outside to alert the gas distributor. Soon after, the accumulated gas is believed to have caught fire, causing a sudden flare-up inside the house. He was put on ventilator support and remains critical. Both are being treated at a burn hospital. Their neighbour Kobale suffered burns to her hands, legs and neck and was taken to hospital. The blaze damaged the house and gutted most of the belongings inside. The Airoli fire brigade reached the spot with a fire engine and water bowser and brought the fire under control. Police and fire officials are investigating the incident. The cylinder and regulator are being examined to determine whether a technical fault caused the gas leak.
The fire broke out between 12.20pm and 12.45pm at Room 202 of Jagdish Patil Niwas in Airoli village, police said. The injured were identified as Rohan Devidas Sonawane, 30, his mother Sunita Sonawane, 50, and their neighbour Sarika Nilesh Kobale. Devidas Bhaurao Sonawane, 54, a security guard, reportedly placed the leaking cylinder in a tub of water and tried to get his family out. Rohan suffered burns over about 80% of his body as well as lung and inhalation injuries. Sunita suffered around 50% burns and is also in critical condition. Sunita’s 28-year-old daughter, Mansi, was in the gallery when the fire broke out and escaped unharmed.
Police said the family had replaced an empty LPG cylinder with a new one.
