After the first season of this K-drama won viewers over with its mix of comedy, action and over-the-top chaebol antics, Flex X Cop season 2 returns with bigger cases, a new team dynamic and a darker side to its hero. The young, wealthy and wildly unconventional detective is back, and Jin I Soo ( Ahn Bo Hyun ) has more chaos waiting for him this time. Arriving with a major cast shake-up, the first six episodes prove that the show can evolve without losing its signature comedic flair.
With Park Ji Hyun unable to return due to scheduling conflicts, the show, which premiered on August 7, introduces a new team leader while also putting I Soo through some of his toughest moments yet.
Season 2 sees I Soo return to Violent Crimes Unit 1 after completing his academy training. By episodes 5 and 6, the team is settling into its new dynamic while investigating the death of a hotel concierge around White Day, a romantic day one month after Valentine’s Day. He gets I Soo’s mix of arrogance, goofy confidence and sincerity just right, while Season 2 also gives him space to show a more vulnerable side. With eight more episodes to close the season, Flex X Cop Season 2 is currently streaming on JioHotstar.
By the end of the sixth episode, the team also hilariously finds out that Jun Young is dating forensic expert Dr Yoo Ji Won ( Jung Ga Hee). But the real trouble arrives with Yoo Sung Won (Yoo Seung Ho), a wealthy sculptor from I Soo’s past whose disturbing artwork seems strangely connected to a larger looming crime. With Lee Gang Hyun ( Park Ji Hyun ) away for training abroad, I Soo teams up with Park Jun Young (Kang Sang Jun) and Choi Kyung Jin (Kim Shin Bi). The season gets off to a fun start with the team going undercover as a mariachi band in Mexico, but things turn dangerous once they return to Seoul and someone starts targeting I Soo, including planting a bomb in his car. Their three-member unit gets a new leader when I Soo’s former academy instructor, Joo Hye Ra (Jung Eun Chae), joins them. Strict and unimpressed by his chaebol status, Hye Ra immediately finds his way of working amusing but does not let him get away with it always. What looks like a romantic crime soon reveals a more calculated motive. Amid the investigation, I Soo’s growing bond with the team and his connection with Kang Hyun’s parents add some warmth. By episode six, it was hinted that he may have a past connected to Hye Ra. Ahn Bo Hyun remains one of the best parts of the series. His panic attacks reminds the viewers that even this larger-than-life detective is affected by the cases he takes on. The direction remains fun and keeps the show’s easy, entertaining tone intact. Still, the format of spending two episodes on one case keeps things engaging, giving each mystery enough room to unfold while allowing the team dynamics and humour to shine.
A clue from his imprisoned brother, Seung Ju (Kwak Si-yang), hints that the attacks may be driven by someone’s “desire”. That said, the action feels a little lighter compared to the first season so far.
