A 16-year-old girl, who was recovered from her boyfriend’s place in Roorkee after allegedly eloping with him, was found hanging at her maternal uncle’s house in Kawal village in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, police said on Monday.
The girl had allegedly eloped with her boyfriend Raju from her parental home in the Sikheda police station area around a month ago. Following a complaint by her family, police registered a case of abduction of a minor girl against Raju. During the investigation, police recovered the girl from Raju’s possession in Roorkee four days ago. Police are investigating the circumstances leading to her death.
Raju was arrested and sent to jail, while the girl was handed over to her maternal uncle after she refused to return to her parents, police said.
Circle Officer Rishika Singh said the girl’s body was sent for post-mortem examination and an investigation into the matter was underway.
