Thiruvananthapuram, Keralam has received 23 per cent less rainfall than normal during the current monsoon season so far, with the state recording 1,278.7 mm of rain against the normal 1,671.4 mm between June 1 and August 24, IMD said here on Monday.
The state has been categorised as having “deficient” rainfall, with the actual rainfall 23 per cent below normal during the period.
Of Keralam’s districts, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram recorded normal rainfall, while the remaining districts were in the deficient category, according to the data released by the India Meteorological Department. Wayanad recorded the highest rainfall deficit among Kerala districts at 51 per cent, receiving 1,039.7 mm against the normal 2,114.7 mm. Idukki followed with a 45 per cent deficit, receiving 1,147.4 mm against the normal 2,092.5 mm. Kollam recorded a 30 per cent deficit, while Thrissur and Lakshadweep recorded 27 per cent and Palakkad 26 per cent less rainfall than normal. Kottayam recorded a seven per cent deficit, while Kozhikode recorded 13 per cent less rainfall than normal. Lakshadweep also recorded deficient rainfall during the period, with 589.3 mm against the normal 803 mm, a deficit of 27 per cent.
The IMD classifies rainfall with a departure of 20 to 59 per cent below normal as “deficient”, while rainfall within 19 per cent above or below normal is considered “normal”.
