Nine people, including six men, two women and a child, died after a massive fire broke out at a hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata around 2 am on Wednesday.
Birbhum Superintendent of Police Vidit Raj Bhundesh said rescue teams reached the hotel after the fire was reported and evacuated people from the building using ladders. “Neither smoke nor flames were visible from the outside. The hotel operators have been taken into custody after police registered an FIR.
Police and fire brigade teams arrived at the scene; 22 people were rescued using ladders, and 11 others were sent to the hospital…7 people have lost their lives in this incident,” he told reporters.
The blaze broke out at a hotel on Monday and was suspected to have been triggered by a short circuit, officials said. Around 60 people were rescued from the building without injuries. This comes two days after a separate hotel fire in West Bengal’s Tarapith in Birbhum district left several people dead and others injured.
Six others were injured and shifted to hospital for treatment, fire brigade sources said. The fire has been doused, the sources said.
