The Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) has launched a time-bound, multi-phase programme to strengthen CNG infrastructure across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad amid a sharp rise in demand and pressure-related issues at some far-end locations of the Pune Geographical Area (GA). The programme will focus on augmenting gas supply, improving network pressure, strengthening pipelines, developing an alternate gas supply source, and increasing dispensing capacity at existing and new CNG stations.
The expansion comes on the back of a significant increase in CNG consumption in the city. The number of CNG vehicles it caters to has risen from around 2.62 lakh to more than 6.20 lakh, while the number of commissioned CNG stations has doubled from 66 to 133, according to MNGL. CNG sales have reached around 12.65 lakh SCMD. During the current monsoon period, sales increased from approximately 1.12 MMSCMD to 1.26 MMSCMD, representing an additional demand of about 1.40 lakh SCMD, equivalent to the demand generated by nearly 35,000 vehicles.
