Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation from the Red Fort on the 80th Independence Day, said India had successfully curbed armed Naxalism and Maoist violence, but stressed that the ideology still posed a challenge. He called for the isolation of what he described as “dimaagi Naxals” — those influenced by Maoist ideology who, he alleged, attempt to penetrate institutions and create unrest.
Modi said the government had pledged in 2014 to free the country from Naxalism.
He said regions that were once affected by violence are now witnessing development, greater trust and increased efforts towards progress.
