The alleged driver, Ashish Diwakar, was arrested on Thursday after public uproar. A 14-year-old Class 8 student was trapped under a car and dragged for nearly 20-25 metres in Kanpur’s Kalyanpur area before the driver stopped, left him by the roadside and fled, police said.
CCTV footage shows a car approaching the boy and hitting him. The boy appears to get trapped beneath the vehicle as the car continues moving before stopping further ahead. He was taken to hospital in serious condition. His father has alleged that the incident may have been deliberate and raised the possibility of a conspiracy. It is registered in the name of Saurabh, a resident of Gadruali in Fatehpur, and a police team was sent there as part of the investigation.
The incident took place around 6 pm on Wednesday near Awas Vikas-1, when the boy, was riding his bicycle close to his home. He is the son of Sandeep Tiwari, a resident of Awas Vikas-1. A case has been registered under Sections 281 and 125(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further legal proceedings are underway.
The driver then got out, moved the injured boy to the side of the road and fled on foot, according to police. Police said they were investigating the allegation. DCP West Qasim Abidi said Kalyanpur police had arrested Diwakar in connection with the case.
The car was seized on Wednesday.
