Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, the son of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, says the United States has revoked his visa, prompting him to appeal directly to President Donald Trump and demand an explanation for the decision.
He then published a three-page letter addressed to Trump from Teapa, Tabasco. López Beltrán announced the development on Instagram on Thursday, August 13, saying he had received a communication informing him that his US visa had been canceled.
At this stage, there is no publicly confirmed US government explanation for the cancellation. The reason for the visa revocation has not been publicly disclosed by the US government. López Beltrán, however, has offered his own explanation: he claimed the decision was politically motivated and accused Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau of ordering it. López Beltrán asked the president whether he was aware of the visa cancellation and, if he was not, suggested that Trump should consider removing Rubio, Landau and other officials whom he accused of acting against political figures who do not align with their views.
Reporting in 2025 noted that US officials had declined to provide reasons for several such visa actions. Because the US government has previously revoked visas belonging to Mexican political figures without publicly explaining the grounds for individual cases, the lack of a stated reason is significant.
In his letter, López Beltrán said Rubio and Landau had ordered the withdrawal of his authorization to enter the United States. He described the decision as political and “propagandistic,” arguing that there was no evidence of an immoral or criminal act against him. López Beltrán, widely known as “Andy,” is the son of López Obrador, who served as Mexico ‘s president from 2018 to 2024 and founded the ruling Morena movement.
