The Nashik City crime branch has arrested two persons for allegedly cheating a man of ₹ 2.17 crore by promising to secure tender-related work for the upcoming Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela, police said on Wednesday.
They allegedly showed him a fake work order bearing the names of the Nashik Municipal Corporation and the Nashik Kumbh Mela Authority and assured him that the work would be allotted to him. However, when the promised work was not secured, he realised that the documents and assurances provided by the accused were allegedly fraudulent and approached the police. Following the complaint, the two suspects were arrested.
The accused have been identified as Tanay Mahajan, 32, of Jamner, and Narendra Mahajan, 51, of Navsakha. Believing their claims, the complainant allegedly paid the accused ₹ 2.17 crore.
Police said three cases have been registered at the Nashik Road police station in connection with the alleged fraud. The accused gained the complainant’s confidence by claiming that they could arrange work related to the kumbh mela, according to the police.
