N Chandrasekaran’s decision to step down as Tata Sons chairman has put the spotlight on the wealth and earnings of one of India’s most highly paid corporate leaders.

His FY26 remuneration included ₹ 17.97 crore in salary and other benefits and ₹ 140.69 crore as profit-linked commission. Tata Sons’ disclosed executive remuneration figures show that Chandrasekaran earned a cumulative ₹ 671.4 crore from FY22 to FY26, according to a Business Standard report based on the company’s annual report. Chandrasekaran joined Tata Consultancy Services in 1987 and went on to become its chief executive officer and managing director in 2009, as per Tata’s official biography and company records.
The commission, therefore, accounted for the overwhelming majority of his annual remuneration, with the ₹ 140.69 crore profit-linked component making up about 89% of his total FY26 pay, based on the figures disclosed in the annual report.
Competitive Landscape
Reuters reported that the group’s succession process is being closely watched as Tata Trusts, which owns about 66% of Tata Sons, remains a major part of the company’s governance structure. Chandrasekaran’s departure will now make way for Tata Sons to select a new chairman after nearly a decade under his leadership.
