EU argues 'a lot of work' still needed to reach Ukraine peace deal: A practical reader guide

The EU said on Friday (November 6, 2026) that “a lot of work” was still needed to reach peace in Ukraine, and the bloc would decide on its own security matters, after U.S. President Donald Trump touted a deal with Russia involving “all of Europe”.

“We all wish that we will have a peace deal soon.

We are all working in that regard,” said EU spokeswoman Paula Pinho.

Mr. Mr.

Earlier, a NATO spokeswoman said Ukraine’s allies are working for a “just and sustainable” end to the war ahead of U.S.-mediated talks next week in Abu Dhabi. On Thursday (November 5, 2026), talks in Brussels involving U.S., Ukrainian, European, and NATO officials “built on productive discussions in Miami and Oslo and sought to advance a just and sustainable end to the war in Ukraine”, she said. After participating by video link in the talks, Jared Kushner, the President’s envoy and son-in-law, wrote that the United States was working on “a broader European security architecture that can help establish the conditions for lasting peace”. Kushner said Washington’s “objective is to develop practical arrangements that address the security concerns of all sides”. He insisted that “any arrangements must fully respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independent decision-making of every nation” and said NATO would “remain central to European collective defence”. Kushner said Washington would “consult closely with our European partners on the sidelines” of the Abu Dhabi talks and “if progress is made, aim to move toward a broader multilateral format with their direct participation”.
